Whiter Than White Isle: How To Experience Ibiza As A Grown Up

And so it was that we found ourselves dining under the beautiful foliage of Bambuddha. The Bambuddha philosophy has been deliberately unorthodox since its inception, replacing the formal European way of dining with starters and mains, to move towards an Asian sharing plates style, where the food arrives as and when it’s prepared. We began our experience with delicious cocktail concoctions, setting the tone nicely for our arrival on the White Isle…

…There’s a fusion feel to the (Bambuddha) menu, and we were lucky enough to be treated to the tasting selection, with head chef Alejandro Arquero Martinez on hand to explain every course. It was all I could do to sit politely while we had this chat, so keen was I to dig into every delicious morsel. The bar, too, boasted mean mixologists that were the equal of any of London’s best bars. Little wonder, then, that many people come here for a meal, but then choose to stay much later.

This is how you should spend your five star trip to Ibiza

You might be forgiven to think you should stay on the coast, but you’d be missing out on one of the best restaurants on the island. We went to Bambuddha, a unique Asian (and Tantric)-inspired fantastical dining experience built into a temple of bamboo and palm trees, in the evening. The owner, John Moon, is a legend on the island. It is said he has experienced every temptation the Earth has to offer (including partying with Mick Jagger), and that fun definitely comes across in the food (and the barely hidden sex shop near the toilets). Taste the black cod for a unimaginable experience.

This is probably the most extravagant, over-the-top restaurant in Ibiza, filled with giant statues of Buddha, fountains and lots of bamboo. Thankfully, the food is as loud and exciting as the décor, with black cod that’s to die for and excellent ceviche. The perfect place for some pre-night out nosh.

Ibiza Season Has Started: Here’s Where to Go This Year. Interview with Jonjon Moon

Tomorrow the Ibiza season officially begins. Every year from May through October, more than 2 million people descend upon Ibiza, one of the Balearic islands off the coast of Spain. Some come for yoga retreats, some come for the gorgeous sandy beaches or to wander around Dalt Vila, the Unesco-listed world heritage site. But let’s be honest, the majority of Ibiza-goers come for one reason – the 24-hour, thousand-person strong, techno-thumping parties lead by Europe’s biggest DJs. We caught up with Jonjon Moon, manager of Bambuddha, the recently relaunched restaurant and an Ibiza institution started by his father John Moon, also a bit of an Ibiza legend, for the inside scoop on the best spots to throw shapes, catch a sunset and nurse a hangover on the White Island.

The dining scene on Ibiza is not to be overshadowed by all those beach clubs. We spent a super cool evening at off-the-beaten-track go-to destination, Bambuddha. Owned by an Ibiza legend, John Moon (rumour has it he partied with Jagger back in the day), a night at Bambuddha is one of the classic Ibiza experiences. Decadent dining (an Asian menu serving up everything from spicy beef salad to black cod), under a canopy of bamboo amongst ancient tantric(!) artefacts. And there’s a night club too (this is Ibiza) to ensure you leave in the island-appropriate state.

Saturday Night in Bambuddha

Crystal chandeliers hang from the ceilings, Buddha statues sit majestically among the tables and bamboo plants swoop wistfully to the floor, leaving you with a sense that you’re no longer in Ibiza, but some faraway magical land. As well as a restaurant there’s a roofless terrace, which allows you to dine under the moonlight and look up at the stars, if at any time you’re able to pry your eyes away from the mouth-watering menu. The place oozes glamour, and that makes it the perfect destination for a night on the town with the girls. Here, high heels and sequins are par for the course, so you don’t even need an excuse to don the new pair of shoes you bought for that ‘special occasion’ – this is it.

There’s a new Bambuddha in town folks… well, to be precise, a newly reincarnated Bambuddha, and let me tell you it is A.MAY.ZING. Bambuddha Review

Parking in the large car-park provided, I entered what has always been one of my favourite Ibiza restaurants. Walking into the restaurant for the first time is a classic Ibiza experience. You could be forgiven for thinking you had somehow been teleported to a temple in Goa. Statues of exotic deities gaze serenely upon you as you walk past incredibly beautiful people lounging around in opulent VIP sections decked out in ruby red silk and plush, gold cushions. Erotic artefacts bestow a sensual, decadent ambience beneath the tropical bamboo canopy that shelter diners from the elements whilst allowing for al fresco dining.

New Beginnings at Bambuddha

Nestled, not particularly quietly, in the countryside, Bambuddha is an Ibiza stalwart, founded by the legend that is John Moon, which has been drawing guests through its famous doors since 1999. It has seen countless parties and entertained the hordes of holidaymakers and residents alike who have enjoyed drinks, dinner and dancing underneath the canopy of bamboo. But now it is time for a change. The Bambuddha reincarnation is spectacular. After entering through the grand entrance hall, which has been re-positioned right in front of the temple, you cannot fail to notice the biggest change – Bambuddha is now open-plan.

Sex, Drugs and Sushi Rolls

Ibiza is made up of extremes. Extreme hotels. Extreme DJ’s. And extreme parties. But what the average Ibiza holidaymaker occasionally overlooks, is the extreme dining.

Bambuddha offers just that: an extreme eating experience that needs a moment to consider. Nestled out in the hills just between Santa Eulalia and Santa Gertrudis, it’s a destination restaurant that requires a marginal, yet worthy amount of effort to get to.

Sitting somewhere between a cocktail bar, restaurant and holy temple, Bambuddha offers modern fusion dining with a spiritual and sexual ambiance. Mediterranean and Oriental flavours merge on your plate, while ancient erotic artifacts, dark wooden furnishings and gentle house beats merge around you.

A Fresh New Look For Bambuddha

There are many restaurants on the island and one of the most famous ones is Bambuddha, formally know as Bambuddha Grove. The owner John Moon has managed to create a temple that happens to serve refreshments. We went to Bambuddha to try it out for you and this is what we experienced. Grab yourself a good glass of wine. Are you ready…?

For the regular visitor of our beautiful island Bambuddha Grove is an icon. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is just stunning. When you take a seat at one of the spaces in the restaurant your mind wanders off to Bali. But wake up quick because you are in Ibiza. Every good concept needs to refresh sometimes. And that is exactly what John and his team did. The first change is the name from Bambuddha Grove to just Bambuddha

Shop Style, Bambuddha Boutique

Bambuddha is one of the trendiest restaurants on the island, hands down the most fashionable place to be, feeding the jet set of Ibiza for fifteen years. As soon as I step through the doors, the Nag Champa incense burning throughout the restaurant transports me back to Bali, into the depths of Ubud. Balearic beats swapped for Indonesian chants sets the tone of the most unique restaurant on the island. Welcome to Ibiza’s very own temple, fusing spirituality with Ibicenco style with MediterrAsian cuisine inspired by the ancient spice route form Cadiz, Spain to Osaka, Japan, including Thai, Sushi and Sashimi.

The jewel in the restaurant for me has to be the Bambuddha Boutique. Owner of Bambuddha Mr. John Moon certainly knows when he is onto a good thing; employing Gonzalo Ordoñez to run the boutique, Ordoñez also designs the Bambuddha range and runs the manufacture out in Bali, where else? Ordeñez previously designed for Prada, taking care of their shoes.
